Root Canal Treatment

If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain when you bite down or chew, or if your normal sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures begins to linger, you might have an infection that requires a root canal.

It’s important not to ignore these symptoms, even if you suffer from dental anxiety. Taking the “wait and see” approach could lead to a dental abscess, affecting your oral and overall health.

The good news is that root canal treatment is the best way to alleviate your tooth pain and restore your smile.

What Happens During the Procedure

The root canal procedure is typically straightforward and usually takes about an hour from start to finish.

The steps of the procedure are as follows:

  1. We’ll numb your tooth and the surrounding area so you won’t feel anything.
  2. Next, we isolate your affected tooth to keep it dry and clean during the procedure.
  3. Using a special dental tool, we’ll open the top of your tooth to access the pulp chamber.
  4. We’ll carefully remove the infected tissue and then clean and disinfect the area.
  5. Then, we’ll add a rubber-like material, known as gutta-percha; this fills and seals your tooth.
  6. Lastly, we’ll add a temporary filling. Later, we’ll add a custom crown to strengthen and protect your tooth.

That’s it!

Why Would I Need a Root Canal?

We often hear patients ask us why root canal therapy is necessary, and the truth is that there are several reasons we perform this common dental treatment:

Deep Decay
When bacteria from an untreated cavity reach your tooth’s inner pulp chamber, it can cause a painful infection. A root canal removes the infection, eliminates the discomfort, and often saves your tooth.
Cracked Tooth
If you have a cracked tooth, even if it isn’t bothering you, it’s a direct pathway for bacteria. Once the bacteria infect the nerve, only a root canal can restore your ability to comfortably bite down and chew.
Repeated Work
Every time you have a dental procedure, it causes stress to the tissues and nerves inside your tooth. Repeated procedures on the same tooth can lead to irritated nerves and require a root canal.

Does a Root Canal Really Hurt? Separating Myth From Reality

Root canal treatment has a very bad reputation for being lengthy and painful, and we understand how the very thought of this procedure can cause worry and anxiety.

But the truth is that a root canal actually eliminates the pain you’re feeling, and once we numb your mouth, you shouldn’t feel any more discomfort.

Research shows that with today’s modern dental technology and effective local anesthetics, root canal therapy is not as complicated and traumatic as people think.

Here are some of the myths and facts regarding root canals:

Myths

  • Root canals are painful, and the procedure causes the pain.
  • Recovering from a root canal is a lengthy, uncomfortable process.
  • Root canal therapy is far worse than other dental treatments.

Facts

  • Root canal treatment eliminates the pain instead of causing it.
  • Most people are comfortable during the procedure, and recovery time is minimal.
  • Root canals are less invasive and more cost-effective than extraction and tooth replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

The words “root canal” can cause fear and anxiety, so it’s perfectly natural to avoid calling the dentist when you have a painful toothache or extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

Although it may seem easier to ignore your symptoms, waiting to get treatment could lead to a dangerous abscess or tooth loss.

So, are there alternatives to root canal therapy?

Can You Avoid a Root Canal?

If you have an infected tooth, a root canal is usually the best treatment option. The procedure removes the infection and often saves your tooth. And once your mouth is numb, you won’t experience any more pain.

The only viable alternative to a root canal is a dental extraction. We can remove the damaged tooth to stop the infection from spreading. If you choose this option, you’ll have to replace the missing tooth, and this frequently costs more than root canal treatment.
