What should I do if my same-day crown feels "high" or my bite feels off?

It is not unusual for your bite to feel different after receiving a dental crown. If your same-day crown feels high, is uncomfortable when you bite down, or makes your teeth come together differently, your crown might need a minor adjustment.

Why Does My Crown Feel High?

Your bite may feel different immediately after your crown because you were numb during your appointment, making it difficult to bite down normally. Your jaw muscles also may have been relaxed or positioned differently while you were sitting in the dental chair. Even a very small amount of additional material on a new crown can cause it to contact your other teeth first.

At Talbert Family Dentistry, your crown is carefully fitted, and your bite is checked before the restoration is securely placed. If your bite still feels off after the numbness wears off, a dental crown bite adjustment may be recommended for you.

What Should I Do If My Bite Feels Off?

While waiting to have your bite evaluated, try chewing on the opposite side of your mouth and choose softer foods to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your new crown. Avoid repeatedly clicking or testing your teeth to see if your crown feels too high or off, as this can irritate the ligament around your tooth's root.

If your bite continues to feel high or uncomfortable, come into our office so we can evaluate your crown and determine whether a dental crown bite adjustment is needed.
